In India, there are substantial inter-state
and intra state disparities in the level of growth of output and
per capita income. In order to promote the industrialization of
the backward areas in the country, the growth centers program was
announced by the government of India in June 1988. According to
this program, 71 growth centers were set up throughout the country
that were allotted to the various states on the basis of a
combined criteria of area, population an d the extent of
industrial backwardness in the ratio of 1:2:1 respectively. These
growth centers provide basic industrial infrastructure like power,
water telecom and banking to enable the states to attract
industries.
